Bokeo Province is in the North West of Laos. Further to the literal translation of Bokeo is "gem mine", the province is rich of precious and semiprecious stones.
The capital city of Bokeo Province is Houayxay on the Mekong river. The province consists of 5 Districts. Its area is 6.196 Km2 and its population is 149.700 inhabitants with the density of 24 inhabiatants/Km2.
In the North, it has border with Luang Namtha Province, in the East and in the South, it has border with Oudomxay Province and In the West, it has border with Myanmar and Thailand (Chiang Khong) separated with the Mekong River. Many tourists enter and leave Laos by the international border check point of Ban Houayxay to Thailand.
