Luang Prabang Province is located in the North of Central Laos, bordering by Oudomxay, Phongsaly and Houaphanh Province in the North, Vientiane and Sayaboury Provinces in the South and South-West and Xiengkhouang Province in the East.
The first name of Luang Prabang was Muang Swa, named after King Khun Xua in the 8th Century. The name was changed to Xieng Dong and then to Xieng Thong. In 1354, when King Fa Ngum unified the Lane Xang Kingdom, Xieng Thong was the capital of Lane Xang Kingdom till 1560 when King Setthathirath moved the capital from Xieng Thong to Vientiane. Since that time Xieng Thong city was renamed Luang Prabang in the name of the golden image of Buddha.
The total population of Luang Prabang province is 408.800 people and the population in the town is about 76.000 people. Its population consist of Khmu Ethnic group about 44%, the Hmong Ethnic group about 16% and the lowlander Lao loum about 39%.
Luang Prabang is the most visited province after Vientiane Capital. Luang Prabang is well known as the site of Lao culture with people and the traditions, temples, historical monuments. The province is surrounded by many types of natural beauties. Luang Prabang City was registered as World Heritage Site on 2nd December 1995.
