Houaphanh Province is located in the East of the country. The province is home to the Viengxay caves (an extensive network of caves used by the Revolutionary Movements in the Indochina War) and the Hintang Archeological Park (Standing Stones Park), one of the most important pre-historic sites in northern Laos.
Its capital city is Sam Neua. Its area is 16.500 Km2 and its population is 332.200 inhabitants with the density of 20 inhabitants/Km2. It has 8 districts.
From North clockwise, neighbouring are Vietnam, the Provinces Xiengkhouang and Luang Prabang.
