Xieng Khouang Province, originally known as Muang Phouan, is located in the north-east of the country. During the Indochina War it was heavily bombed. The capital city of Xieng Khouang Province is Phonsavanh with a population of 262.200 inhabitants. It is composed of 7 districts.
