Xieng Khouang Province

Xieng Khouang Province, originally known as Muang Phouan, is located in the north-east of the country. During the Indochina War it was heavily bombed. The capital city of Xieng Khouang Province is Phonsavanh with a population of 262.200 inhabitants. It is composed of 7 districts. It has border in the North West with Luang Prabang Province, in North East with Houaphanh Province, in the East with Vietnam, in the South with Bolikhamsay Province and in the West with Vientiane Province. The major tourist sites of Xieng Khouang Province is the famous Plains of Jars (Main Site, Site 2 and 3), the ruins of Wat That Foun, Wat Phiavat, That Siphom in Muang Khoune District, Tham Piw Caves, the hot spring water in Muang Kham District, Ethnic Villages, local market (specially the market in Phonesavanh.
